(Elena bursts into the palace carrying a pumpkin)
ELENA: Monster pumpkin coming through!
(Armando runs over to her)
ARMANDO: Oh, let me help you with that, Your Highness.
ELENA: Thanks, Armando, but I got it. Love the decorations.
(Elena trips and the pumpkin rolls over to a suit of armor. An axe falls from the suit of armor and slices the pumpkin in half)
ELENA: And that is how you cleanly slice a pumpkin.
ARMANDO: Oh!
-Scene 2-
(Luisa and Francisco are in the kitchen helping the chefs make cookies)
LUISA: Sugar, cinnamon, honey. We have all the ingredients to make my famous Calabaza en Tacha, except...
(Elena enters the room with the sliced pumpkin)
ELENA: Calabaza. Already sliced.
LUISA: With what? An axe?
ELENA: Whatever gets the job done.
(Elena laughs nervously)
ELENA: So how's everything coming? I don't want to be late to the Día de los Muertos celebration.
FRANCISCO: What's the rush? It's not like our relatives are going anywhere.
ELENA: I was just excited. Día de los Muertos is the one day a year we get to celebrate the family who aren't with us anymore. It's like we're throwing a party, and everyone we love is invited.

-Scene 3-
(Isabel is sitting at the dining room table eating a cookie. Elena walks over to her)
ELENA: There you are. We're ready to go. Hey, where's your costume?
ISABEL: Uh... It ripped when I was putting it on.
ELENA: Oh, I'll have a seamstress mend it right away. Is it up in your room?
ISABEL: It's alright. I'll do it myself.
ELENA: Okay. Well, we'll wait for you.
ISABEL: No! I mean... you guys go on. I'll see you at the graveyard later.
(Isabel leaves the room)
-Scene 4-
(Elena, Luisa, and Francisco are at the graveyard setting up an altar for Elena's parents)
ELENA: Oh, wait a second. Where's the Pan Dulce?
LUISA: I gave it to Francisco.
FRANCISCO: That was for the altar? I thought you were giving me a snack.
LUISA: Likely story.
ELENA: Well, we need the Pan Dulce for the altar. Sweet bread is Mami's favorite.
FRANCISCO: I'll send a servant right away.
ELENA: That's okay. I'll go pick some up.
(Elena walks past a woman who is setting up an altar for her grandfather)
WOMAN: Hope you like your altar, Abuelo.
(Elena sees the ghost of the woman's grandfather appear next to the altar)
GHOST: Oh, mija, I love it. Look at that handsome devil.
ELENA: (to the ghost) But... that's you.
GHOST: You can see me?
ELENA: Yes.
GHOST: Huh. Can you see the other ghosts?
ELENA: Ghosts?
(When Elena looks around, she realizes that she can see all of the ghosts that arrived at the graveyard. She can also hear their conversations. She sees a ghost woman dancing with a ghost man)
GHOST 1: Oh, Rogelio, you are so light on your feet.
(Elena sees another ghost telling jokes)
GHOST 2: And she left him at the altar!
(Ghost 2 and the ghosts he's with laugh)
GHOST 3: (to Ghost 2) That one never gets old.
ELENA: (to herself) Okay, seeing ghosts, not normal. I better talk to Zuzo.
(Elena begins to run to the carriage, but she almost runs into the ghost of Doña Angelica)
ELENA: Oh, I'm sorry. Pardon me.
(The ghost of Doña Angelica follows Elena as she enters the carriage)
ELENA: Zuzo? Zuzo! Zuzo!!
(Zuzo appears next to Elena)
ZUZO: Hey, Princess. Were you calling me? It was hard to hear over all the singing.
ELENA: You celebrate Day of the Dead too?
ZUZO: Yeah, it's a big deal in the Spirit World. You know, 'cause of all the spirits. The party's gonna be pretty epic. So what's up?
ELENA: It seems I can suddenly see ghosts.
ZUZO: Hey, that's great! So can I!
ELENA: But you're a spirit fox, and I'm just an ordinary person.
ZUZO: Well, you did spend a bunch of years in that amulet, just marinating its magic. And you can see me.
ELENA: So I can see ghosts now, too?
ZUZO: Hmm. Probably only today.
ELENA: Why just today?
ZUZO: 'Cause this is the one day of the year ghosts come to party with the living. Speaking of parties, I've got a conga line to lead. Enjoy you're new power, Princess.
(Zuzo disappears, and the ghost of Doña Angelica appears on Elena's lap)
DOÑA ANGELICA: I thought that pesky fox would never leave.
ELENA: Uh, excuse me?
(Doña Angelica disappears and re-appears next to Elena)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Oh. Sorry, Princesa. When you saw me at the cemetery, I knew you were the only one who could help me.
ELENA: Help you? With what?
DOÑA ANGELICA: My name is Doña Angelica. In this very day, my grandchildren are preparing to sell the family restaurant to a vile, greedy man who wants to open a bank!
ELENA: And you need my help how?
DOÑA ANGELICA: You must stop them from selling it. People used to line up around the block just to eat at Café Angelica. It is my legacy. Go to the restaurant, tell my grandchildren not to break their dear Abuela's heart.
ELENA: So you want me to convince two complete strangers not to sell their restaurant because their grandmother's ghost told me to?
DOÑA ANGELICA: I did not say it would be easy. But yes, this is what I ask.
ELENA: I really wanna help you, Doña, but my family is waiting for me to pick up Pan Dulce.
DOÑA ANGELICA: You're so sweet for honoring your family. Mine is not building an altar today. Instead, they are selling my dreams to the highest bidder.
(Doña dramatically begins to sob)
ELENA: Okay, um.... I suppose I could probably-
DOÑA ANGELICA: Excellent.
ELENA: Stop by.
DOÑA ANGELICA: It's just down the street. Tell your driver we don't have much time.
-Scene 5-
(At Café Angelica, Carmen is tasting a soup she is making. Julio enters the kitchen carrying a box)
JULIO: Ay, Carmen, we are selling the restaurant today. Why aren't you packing?
CARMEN: I am a cook, Julio. And cooks cook.
JULIO: But what is the point? We don't have any customers. As usual.
(Carmen and Julio hear someone enter the restaurant)
CARMEN: Ah, you were saying?
(Carmen leaves the kitchen, and is surprised to see Elena. Unbeknownst to Carmen, the ghost of Doña Angelica is with her)
ELENA: Hi there. Table for two.
DOÑA ANGELICA: (to Elena) They can't see me.
ELENA: I mean one.
CARMEN: Princess Elena?
(Julio doesn't realize that it is Elena)
JULIO: I'm sorry. We are closed. (realizes that it's Elena) Princess Elena!
CARMEN: We are so honored to have you in our restaurant.
(Carmen leads Elena to a table)
CARMEN: Please sit, sit.
(Elena sits at the table)
CARMEN: I just made a feast fit for a princess.
(Carmen goes into the kitchen. Once she's gone, Julio runs over to Elena)
JULIO: Quick, run. Save yourself!
ELENA: What? Why?
JULIO: Trust me, you don't want to-
(Carmen reenters the room with a trey with a lid over it)
CARMEN: Here we are!
JULIO: (to Elena) Too late.
(Carmen places the try in front of Elena)
CARMEN: Hope you're hungry! Allow me to present my latest creation. The Cray-tala!
(Carmen takes the lid off the try to reveal a creepy-looking dead lobster that is staring right at Elena.)
ELENA: (startled) Yah! I mean, yum.
DOÑA ANGELICA: You mean yuck. Ay-ay-yi.
ELENA: (to Carmen) Yeah, um, I had a big breakfast, so I'm not very hungry.
(Elena turns the plate around so the lobster isn't looking at her anymore)
JULIO: You see, Carmen? This is why we're selling the restaurant. Nobody wants to eat your food.
DOÑA ANGELICA: And no wonder. Look what she's serving. I swear, it looks like he's staring at me no matter where I float.
CARMEN: I am an artist, Julio. The plate is my canvas. The food, my paints.
JULIO: Sometimes it does taste like paint. The truth is, Carmen, you're just not a good cook.
CARMEN: Yes, I am!
DOÑA ANGELICA: She is. Carmen used to help me cook all my food, and it always turned out delicious.
(Carmen and Julio continue their argument)
JULIO: Your Cray-Tala did bite me!
ELENA: I have an idea. Why don't you try cooking your grandmother's food? I heard it was pretty popular.
CARMEN: I would, but she never gave us her recipes.
JULIO: Our grandmother had a secret cookbook. I looked everywhere, but I couldn't find it.
DOÑA ANGELICA: Oh, that's right. I forgot to tell them where I hid it.
ELENA: (to Doña Angelica) So tell me where you hid it. I'll give the cookbook to Carmen, she'll cook your recipes, the customers will come back, and they won't have to sell the restaurant.
CARMEN: (to Julio) Who is she talking to?
JULIO: Uh, the Cray-Tala?
DOÑA ANGELICA: (to Elena) There's only one problem.
ELENA: What?
DOÑA ANGELICA: I forgot where I hid it.
JULIO: Uh, Your Majesty, who are you talking to?
ELENA: Oh, well, I know this might sound a little out there, but I'm talking to your grandmother.
JULIO: Are you feeling alright?
CARMEN: Perhaps the princess is tired?
ELENA: No, really, I'm talking to your grandmother.
JULIO: But she's not with us anymore.
ELENA: I know. Um... the thing is, well, I can see ghosts.
JULIO: Ghosts? That's-
CARMEN: Amazing!
JULIO: Not the word I was going to use, no.
CARMEN: (looking in the wrong place) Hi, Abuelita!
(Elena directs Carmen to where Doña Angelica is)
ELENA: She's over there.
CARMEN: Hi, Abuelita.
DOÑA ANGELICA: Awww.
ELENA: Your grandmother wants to show you where she hid her cookbook.
CARMEN: Really?
ELENA: If she can remember where she hid it.
JULIO: Your Majesty, with all due respect, I do not believe in ghosts. But if there's any chance you know where the cookbook is, by all means, lead the way.
DOÑA ANGELICA: Wait. I remember. It's in my old bedroom.
ELENA: (to Carmen and Julio) It's in her bedroom.
(Doña Angelica begins to lead them to her bedroom)
DOÑA ANGELICA: No, it's in the kitchen.
ELENA: (to Carmen and Julio) The kitchen.
(Doña Angelica begins to lead them to the kitchen)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Oh, I mean the attic.
ELENA: (to Carmen and Julio) The attic.
(Doña Angelica begins to lead them to the attic)
DOÑA ANGELICA: It's in the basement of the restaurant.
ELENA: (to Carmen and Julio) It's in the basement.... I hope.
(Doña Angelica leads them to the basement)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Follow me. It's in the box in the corner.
ELENA: (pointing to the box) She says it's in there.
(Carmen rushes over to the box and opens it. There are a bunch of small books inside, but no sign of the cookbook)
CARMEN: (to Elena) You sure she said this box?
DOÑA ANGELICA: I thought that's where I put it.
JULIO: Well, Princess, it looks like your ghost was wrong.
CARMEN: Maybe Abuela hid her cookbook in another box. She was always a little forgetful.
DOÑA ANGELICA: No, I wasn't. Was I? I forget. Maybe it's in one of the other boxes.
ELENA: (to Carmen) She says to check the other boxes.
(Elena and Carmen begin to look through the other boxes)
JULIO: Ay, we do not have time for this. Our buyer is coming in two hours.
CARMEN: (to Julio) Then what are you waiting for? Help me look.
(Carmen holds up two dolls, one of them is dressed like a knight)
CARMEN: (to Julio) Hey, remember these?
JULIO: Sir Rolando!
CARMEN: (to Elena) He used to run around the restaurant pretending he was the bravest knight in the kingdom. Trying to get the customers to joust with him. Remember that, Julio?
JULIO: I remember playing hide-and-seek with him during the dinner rush.
(The scene shows a flashback of when Julio and Carmen were little. Carmen is running around the restaurant with her doll. She almost runs into Doña Angelica, who is carrying a trey with food)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Carmen, this is not a playground.
(Carmen hides under a table and giggles. Julio finds her)
YOUNG JULIO: Gotcha!
YOUNG CARMEN: You always find me. Why can't I ever find you?
YOUNG JULIO: 'Cause I hide better than you do.
YOUNG CARMEN: Oh yeah?
(Carmen takes Julio's doll)
YOUNG CARMEN: Well, I'm gonna hide Sir Rolando where you'll never find him.
YOUNG JULIO: No, give him back!
(As Carmen and Julio begin to fight over Julio's doll, Doña Angelica walks over to them with a trey of food)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Dinnertime.
YOUNG JULIO: I'm starving.
YOUNG CARMEN: Me too.
(Carmen and Julio sit at the table as Doña Angelica places the food in front of them)
YOUNG CARMEN AND YOUNG JULIO: (to Doña Angelica) Thanks, Abuelita.
(The scene goes back to the present-day)
JULIO: Whenever we argued, Abuelita would feed us.
DOÑA ANGELICA: They'd be too happy eating to stay mad at each other.
CARMEN: Come to think of it, I never did find Julio. Where was your hiding place?
JULIO: I guess I can tell you now. I hid in that nook in the back of the pantry.
DOÑA ANGELICA: (to Elena) The nook! That's where I hid my cookbook!
ELENA: Are you sure?
JULIO: Of course I'm sure.
ELENA: I was talking to your grandmother.
DOÑA ANGELICA: I think so.
(Doña Angelica leads them to the pantry)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Down there. Behind the sacks.
(Elena moves the sacks to reveal a large cookbook)
JULIO: You found it!
DOÑA ANGELICA: My cookbook!
(Elena hands the cookbook to Carmen)
ELENA: Here you go.
CARMEN: Now I can cook all of Abuelita's famous recipes.
ELENA: And I can't wait to try them. But right now, I'd better pick up the Pan Dulce and get back to the cemetery. My family's probably wondering where I am.
DOÑA ANGELICA: (to Elena) Thank you.
CARMEN: Julio, we don't have to sell the restaurant now.
(Julio takes the cookbook from Carmen)
JULIO: Oh, we're still selling the restaurant.
ELENA: What?
JULIO: Carmen, I love you, but even with Abuelita's recipes, I just don't think you're a good enough cook. However, I do think if we sell the restaurant, and the cookbook, we can make even more money.
CARMEN: Okay, so maybe no one likes my recipes, but they love Abuelita's. And I can cook anything if I have the recipe. Just give me a chance.
JULIO: I have given you a chance for five years. All I have gotten are stomachaches and bills we can't pay.
CARMEN: I will prove I can cook!
(Carmen takes the cookbook from Julio and runs away from him)
JULIO: Give that back, Carmen!
CARMEN: No!
(Carmen and Julio begin to fight over the cookbook)
ELENA: Okay, okay. How about both of you put the cookbook down, and we'll all talk this through?
(In the midst of fighting over the cookbook, Carmen and Julio drop it in the oven, which burns it)
DOÑA ANGELICA: My cookbook!
JULIO: Carmen, look what you did!
CARMEN: What I did? You mean what you did! Sell the restaurant, I don't care! At least I'll never have to talk to you again, Julio Osvaldo Valentino Guzman!
(Carmen storms away)
JULIO: I gladly welcome the peace and quiet, Carmen Rosa Guadalupe Guzman!
(Julio storms away)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Thank you, Princesa, for trying to help. All I wanted to do was save my restaurant. But I lost my family.
(The ghost of Doña Angelica floats away. Elena sees that the creepy-looking dead lobster is still staring at her)
ELENA: (to the lobster) What are you looking at? I tried. Hmmm.
(Elena sees Carmen and Julio's dolls on the floor)
ELENA: Whenever they argued, Doña Angelica would cook for them. (gasps) That's it!
-Scene 6-
(Carmen is sitting alone at a table. Elena walks up to her)
ELENA: Carmen, did you see which way your grandmother went? Oh, no, of course you didn't; she's a ghost. I'll be right back.
(Elena leaves the café and sees the ghost of Doña Angelica floating above the street)
ELENA: Doña Angelica! Wait!
(Elena runs over to Doña Angelica)
ELENA: I know how to fix things between Julio and Carmen, and save the restaurant.
DOÑA ANGELICA: You do? How?
ELENA: Come with me.
(Elena and Doña Angelica reenter the Café and go over to Carmen)
ELENA: Carmen, remember how your Abuela's food used to bring you and Julio together? You can still make her recipes and prove to him that you are a good cook. Then he won't have to sell the restaurant.
CARMEN: How? He burned her cookbook.
ELENA: Yes, but your Abuela is right here. She can tell me the recipe, and I can tell you. So what do you say?
CARMEN: I say, what are we doing out here when the kitchen is in there? Let's get cookin'!
-Scene 7-
(Elena, Carmen, and Doña Angelica are in the kitchen. Carmen appears to be chopping red pepper, and then she adds it to the pot which she removes from the stove)
DOÑA ANGELICA: (to Elena) Okay, now whisk the sofrito into the stock.
ELENA: (to Carmen) She wants us to add the sofrito.
(Carmen pours the sofrito into the pot and begins to mix it)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Whisk in sofrito. Mix it in well. Put your heart into it.
ELENA: (to Carmen) She said to put your heart into it.
CARMEN: Oh, she always said that. I miss cooking with you, Abuelita.
DOÑA ANGELICA: Me too, but I am always with you in your memories.
ELENA: (to Carmen) She says she's always with you in your memories.
CARMEN: (tearing up) It's true.
-Scene 8-
(Carmen carries a large paella over to the room where Julio is. Elena and Doña Angelica are with her. Carmen knocks on the door)
JULIO: (from the other side of the door) Go away!
CARMEN: (to Elena) What are we doing? Julio's so stubborn.
ELENA: Here. I have an idea.
(Elena holds the paella up to the door and blows some of the steam through the keyhole.)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Three, two one.
(Julio smells the paella and opens the door)
ELENA: Dinner is served.
JULIO: It.... It couldn't be.
CARMEN: It's Abuela's paella.
JULIO: But the cookbook's gone.
CARMEN: She told me how to make it. And her molé and pazole.
(Carmen holds up a notepad)
CARMEN: I have all her recipes now. Try some.
(Julio eats some of the paella)
JULIO: Mmm. It's just how she used to make it. She's really here. (looking in the wrong place) Hi Abuelita!
(Elena directs Julio to where Doña Angelica is)
ELENA: Over there.
JULIO: Abuelita, I've missed you. (to Carmen) And you... I was wrong, Carmen. You are a great cook.
(Julio hugs Carmen)
DOÑA ANGELICA: Ay, it's so beautiful. But the food is getting cold.
JULIO: Carmen, I'm sorry we argued.
CARMEN: Me too.
ELENA: Let's eat!
(Just then, a man named Señor Estrada enters the café)
JULIO: Oh, Señor Estrada. Yes, good evening.
SEÑOR ESTRADA: Yes, yes, let's just skip the niceties. Where's the contract? I've got a bank to open. This place will finally have some money coming in, eh? (notices Elena) Your Majesty.
JULIO: You're right, Señor Estrada. This place will finally be making money, because we have the best chef cooking the best food in town. I'm sorry, but this restaurant is no longer for sale.
CARMEN: We're really keeping it, Julio?
JULIO: Yes, Carmen.
(Carmen hugs Julio)
SEÑOR ESTRADA: Do you mean to tell me that I came all this way for nothing?
CARMEN: No, not nothing. Please join us.
SEÑOR ESTRADA: I don't have time-
(Elena puts a spoon of paella in his mouth)
SEÑOR ESTRADA: Mmm. Paella!
ELENA: The best in the kingdom.
JULIO: Sit, eat.
(Señor Estrada sits at a table and continues to eat the paella)
JULIO: Then go tell everyone you know that Café Angelica is open for business once more.
ELENA: Well, now that everything is sorted out, I better head back to the cemetery.
(Elena begins to leave the café)
CARMEN: Wait. I have something for you.
(Carmen goes into the kitchen)
DOÑA ANGELICA: (to Elena) Thank you for all that you've done, Elena.
JULIO: Please, Your Majesty, come back and visit us soon.
ELENA: I will.
(Carmen returns from the kitchen with a bag of Pan Dulce. She gives it to Elena)
CARMEN: I made Pan Dulce for your parents' altar. Don't worry, it's my Abuelita's recipe.
ELENA: Thank you. Both of you.
-Scene 9-
(Elena returns to the graveyard with the bag of Pan Dulce. She goes over to Luisa and Francisco, who are by her parents' altar)
FRANCISCO: There you are. We were about to eat dinner.
LUISA: Here. Let me serve you a plate. Where's Isabel?
ELENA: She hasn't come yet?
FRANCISCO: You were taking so long, we thought you went to get her.
ELENA: No.
FRANCISCO: I will send a royal guard to fetch her.
(Elena runs off)
FRANCISCO: Or she can do it.
-Scene 10-
(Isabel is sitting alone on her bed sketching. Her costume is sitting nearby. Elena begins to knock on the door)
ELENA: Isa?
(Isabel hides her costume under her pillows)
ELENA: Isa? Isa?
ISABEL: Come in.
(Elena enters Isabel's bedroom with the bag of Pan Dulce)
ELENA: What are you doing here?
ISABEL: Sketching.
(Elena sits next to Isabel)
ELENA: Why aren't you at the celebration? You're missing all the fun.
ISABEL: I couldn't fix my costume, so I decided to stay home. What's in the bag?
ELENA: Pan Dulce. Want some?
ISABEL: I guess so.
(Elena and Isabel begin to eat some of the Pan Dulce)
ISABEL: Mm. It's almost as good as Mami's.
ELENA: Almost. Hey, do you remember how Mami used to read us bedtime stories?
ISABEL: Uh-huh.
ELENA: And she acted out all the parts.
ISABEL: With all those funny voices.
ELENA: And Papi would come in and play Wild Wild Seas, remember?
(Elena begins to jump on Isabel's bed)
ELENA: (laughs) And he'd jump on the bed so the mattress rocked like a ship in a stormy sea.
(Isabel begins to jump on the bed with Elena)
ISABEL: And then Papi would spin me around!
(Isabel spins around)
ELENA: Like this?
(Elena picks up Isabel and spins her around)
ELENA: And then he'd scream...
ELENA AND ISABEL: "Girl overboard!"
(Elena tosses Isabel in the air, and they collapse on the bed laughing. Elena then picks up Isabel's sketch book and notices a sketch of their parents)
ELENA: Isabel, this is a great drawing of Mami and Papi. They would've loved this. We should put it on their altar.
ISABEL: But... my costume.
ELENA: I can sew that up in a second. Where is it?
(Isabel looks down at her pillows, and Elena pulls the costume out from underneath the pillows)
ELENA: Isa, your costume's fine. What's going on?
ISABEL: I don't wanna go to the graveyard.
ELENA: Why not?
ISABEL: (sighs) I miss Mami and Papi too much.
ELENA: I know.
(Elena hugs Isabel)
ELENA: I miss them too. But that's why we have the celebration every year, so we can talk about all the good times we had together. Like reading stories and jumping on the bed. Because if we keep those memories alive, it's like they're always with us. And that doesn't make me sad; it makes me happy.
ISABEL: I never thought about it like that. Do you think we can still make it in time?
ELENA: If you hurry.
-Scene 11-
(Elena and Isabel arrive at the graveyard. Isabel is now wearing her costume, and Elena has Isabel's drawing and the bag of Pan Dulce)
ELENA: (to Isabel) Oh, look. The procession is starting.
ISABEL: Great!
(Elena and Isabel walk over to their parents' altar, where Luisa and Francisco are standing)
FRANCISCO: Elena!
LUISA: Isabel!
ELENA: Come on, let's put your sketch and Pan Dulce on the altar. Well, what's left of it.
(Isabel places the sketch and Pan Dulce on the altar)
ISABEL: There you go, Mami, Papi.
(Isabel stands next to Elena as they admire their parents' altar)
ISABEL: Elena, I really feel like Mami and Papi are here with us. Does that sound weird?
(Just then, Elena sees the ghosts of their parents proudly watching them.)
ELENA: No. I know they are.
(Elena, Isabel, Luisa, and Francisco continue to admire the altar)
