King Raul Castillo and Queen Lucia Flores are minor characters from the Disney animated series, Elena of Avalor. They are the parents of princesses Elena and Isabel and the former rulers of Avalor. Queen Lucia was the bearer of the Amulet of Avalor before Elena, while King Raul was the bearer of the Scepter of Light.

History

King Raul Castillo succeeded his father as the King of Avalor. He had a younger brother from Nueva Vista who was killed after his boat had been shipwrecked by a Sirena attack, leaving his nephew, Cristobal to rule Nueva Vista as the Duke. At some point, he married Lucia Flores who became his Queen. Lucia was the daughter Fransisco and Luisa Flores, and the sister of Margarita, who, with her husband, had also died in a shipwreck, leaving Lucia's nephew Esteban to be taken in by her family. Raul and Lucia ruled Avalor for many years, making many decisions that they knew were best for the kingdom they had also inherited their family heirlooms, including the Amulet of Avalor, and the Scepter of Light, both of which would fall to their daughter. Lucia at some point gave birth to Elena, and seven years later, Isabel. By Elena's fifteenth birthday, her mother gave her the Amulet of Avalor saying that it would always protect her from danger.

At some point, King Raul and Queen Lucia had prevented Shuriki, the powerful sorceress of the Northern Islands, from attacking and overthrowing Avalor's allies. This was met with vocal caution from Esteban, who warned Raul that Shuriki would set her sights upon Avalor, but his warnings fell upon deaf ears, resulting in the Queen and King's nephew secretly making a deal with Shuriki to help her invade the kingdom, in exchange for power and her sparing his family's lives.

The following year after Elena's 15th birthday, Raul and Lucia had left the palace to work on the float for the upcoming Carnaval. Esteban had seemingly come with them, but left to help Shuriki infiltrate the kingdom behind the couples' backs. As Raul and Lucia were returning to the palace for dinner, they were chased by Shuriki, who cornered them in the palace and cast a spell to ambush and murder them, before coming after the rest of the royal family and setting her sights upon the palace. Within the 41 years following the assassination, Shuriki had layed claim to Avalor, undoing all the traditions that the King and Queen upheld. It wasn't until the surviving members of the royal family had escaped from their magical prisons that Shuriki was deposed, putting Elena on the throne to succeed her parents.

In the episode "A Day to Remember", Elena and Isabel remembered the good times they had with their parents before they died. Isabel missed them so much that she didn't want to go to the Día de los Muertos festivities and pay her respects to her parents' memorial until Elena told her the reason she herself enjoyed this day. This convinced Isabel to suit up in her Día de los Muertos costume and join Elena and their grandparents at the memorial for the King and Queen, with Isabel leaving a drawing of her parents and the ceremonial Pan Dulce bread on the memorial, which brought her grandparents to happy tears at her contribution to her late parents' memorial. At the end of the episode, thanks to Elena's ability to see ghosts alongside animal spirits, she was able to see Raul and Lucia's ghosts, smiling proudly at their daughters from the afterlife, shortly after Isabel mentioned that she felt that their parents were still with them somehow.

In "The Princess Knight", it is revealed that Queen Lucia was the best fencer in all of Avalor and almost won the Swordsman Tournament Cup, only to have her opponent, Lord Elrod, cheat by breaking her wrist, and as a result of that injury, she forfeited, unable to compete further, allowing Lord Elrod to win by default. Several years later, after learning the truth, Elena righted that wrong when she defeated Elrod's son to reclaim the title and dedicated the win in her mother's honor.

Season Two

In the Season 2 premiere, "The Jewel Of Maru", King Raul and Queen Lucia appear before their eldest daughter due to it being the Day of the Dead again, noticing her in a state of despair, concerning them. After Elena explains her situation regarding the test foreshadowed by Quita Moz and her fear of failing it, never being crowned Queen, and succeeding them as Avalor's sovereign, along with the situation with the Delgados, her parents offer her valuable advice about how this isn't the test she was worried about, and she must do what she thinks is best for Avalor as she never gave up, even when she was imprisoned in the Amulet of Avalor. Their advice allows Elena to retrieve the Jewel of Maru from the Delgados and seal it away for good so it won't be used for evil. Though she arrives late back at her parents' memorial with the Día de los Muertos festivities over, she is grateful for the advice they gave her and tells them she'll see them again at next year's Day of the Dead.

From A Spy in the Palace to Science Unfair, Shuriki plans to steal Queen Lucia's tiara, (of which the Delgados had failed to steal previously) in order to use the magic of its enchanted jewel to forge a new wand. Though Carla nearly succeeds at getting it in her first attempt at getting into the Royal Treasury, she's stopped by a repentant Naomi, but due to being so close to Princess Elena and Naomi now, Carla would be able to steal the tiara when the time is right, but only if she can do so before the Shape-shifting Potion Shuriki had her drink wears off and exposes her.

In "Rise of the Sorceress", as the Shape-shifting Potion begins to wear off, Carla manages to acquire the Reversal Potion that Mateo planned to use to restore Fiero to flesh and blood, allowing Shuriki to revive him and convince him to ally with her again, despite his hesitation due to her past actions against him. They break into the Royal Treasury, and Shuriki manages to attain the gem from Lucia's tiara to craft a new wand from while breaking the rest of the tiara in half under her foot to add further insult to Lucia's memory after murdering her and Raul. However, as they take their leave, they are spotted by Elena, who is horrified to see Shuriki again, flashing back to the fateful day when she saw Shuriki cut down Raul and Lucia before her very eyes during her original takeover of the kingdom.

In the following episode, "Shapeshifters", Elena vows to take down Shuriki personally to attain revenge on her for Raul and Lucia's murders. However, she is met with defiance from the Grand Council.

Raul and Lucia appear in flashbacks of their murder in the episode "The Race for the Realm", as their deaths continue to haunt Elena, which further motivates Elena to go after Shuriki to stop her. This unfortunately results in Shuriki escaping with the fully-formed Scepter of Night.

In "Song of the Sirenas" it's revealed that King Raul had a younger brother who lived in Nueva Vista. Raul's brother was killed in a Sirena attack that sunk the ship he was on, leaving his young nephew, Cristobal to rule the city with a deep hatred for Sirenas. By the second half of the special, Elena uses the Scepter of Light to kill Shuriki, avenging her parents once and for all.

Season Three

In "Norberg Peace Prize," Esteban gives Elena a book that King Raul had written about diplomacy to help her with making peace between Norberg and Hectoria.

In the special, "The Magic Within," Raul and Lucia are remembered fondly by their parents during Carnaval season, especially as that was when Shuriki had killed them. When Esteban is questioned about the float they had worked on (as he supposedly left with them), his unreasonable outburst results in Elena using her Truth vision powers of the Scepter of Night, of which she had gotten after falling into the Well of Crystals; It is then where Esteban's dark secret of helping Shuriki's invasion is revealed, as a young Esteban and Victor reveal the location of the King and Queen and harbor the sorceress into the kingdom, not long before she attacks them.

During Esteban's trial, Elena and Luisa hold Esteban accountable for the murder of the Queen and King and sentence him into exile. During his escape, he looks at a portrait in the treasury featuring him, his grandparents, uncle, and aunt. In spite of his guilt, he aids the Delgados in their escape, joining with Ash in the longrun.

Their spirits are seen in "Flower of Light" when their eldest daughter and her childhood friend Felecia go to the spirit world to rekindle the mystical Flower of Light. For the first time in 44 years, Elena is able to hug her parents. Months later, in Giant Steps, a portrait of them is seen when Princess Elena expresses her joy at seeing Naomi again.

In the series finale, "Coronation Day," puppets of Elena's parents are displayed as puppets during Armando and Marlena's display of the previous four years of Elena's rule. Their spirits appear in the second act of the special when Elena is trapped in the Spirit World with Ash Delgado after choosing to go after Esteban instead of Ash out of revenge. Per the rules laid by the Grand Macaw, Elena and Ash would face each other in an olaball match, and the "winner" would go to the highest of heights, whilst the loser went to the "lowest realm." Raul and Lucia joined Elena's team with Zuzo, but during the match, when Elena began to grow angry and frustrated, allowing Ash to take a lead on her, they call a timeout to talk to her about her behavior. When Elena explains how she's angry with Esteban for his part in Shuriki's original takeover that led to their deaths, Raul and Lucia tell her that being angry with him won’t bring them back from the dead, and she musn’t let her anger cloud her judgement, or seek revenge as it won’t solve anything.

King Raul then reveals that Shuriki’s invasion is his fault; he had prevented Shuriki from attacking Avalor's allies when he was still alive and in power as Avalor's sovereign, but angered by his interference with her plans, Shuriki turned her attention to Avalor in retaliation. Esteban had tried to warn Raul about Shuriki seeking revenge, but he ignored him, thus leading to Esteban allying with Shuriki under the agreement that his family would be spared her wrath, ultimately compromising the kingdom. This revelation changes Elena's mindset, getting her to calm down and give up on her path to revenge. This also allows her to figure out the meaning behind the Grand Macaw's words regarding what would happen to the winner and loser of the olaball match. Thus, Elena loses the olaball match to Ash on purpose, resulting in Ash being condemned to staying in the Spirit World for eternity while Elena is allowed to return to Avalor, spending one last goodbye with her parents before returning home, knowing they will always be watching over her from the Spirit World from this point on. After stopping the Four Shades of Awesome and forgiving Esteban, Elena officially succeeds Raul and Lucia as sovereign of Avalor as she is crowned Queen by Francisco.
